A friend of mine gave me a packet of something called roasted chana. I'm not exactly sure what it is, though it looks like small chickpeas with skins. Google searches turn up recipes for a roasted chana dal, but it's unlike the dal I normally make from lentils. Image searches on this stuff show something fairly different from what I have (will take pictures when there's enough light).

Am not sure what to do with the stuff.

A quick consult of my Madhur jaffrey books confirms that it is chick pea dal.
It cooks quicker than most dals. In one recipe I checked she cooked it for about an hour in water, like cooking beans, then drained and continued the recipe cooking it with spices and cubes of potato.
If you wish recipes, please drop me a line and I'd be happy to copy them out for you.

Oh, thank you so much! What you mentioned with the potato and all already sounds great!

I wouldn't want to impose, but some other ideas would be wonderful...

No worries...I'll get you the recipe. Give me a day or two to type it in as I am busy getting all the recipes ready for the summer classes.

Rest assured i WILL be making that smoked oyster pasta as I LOVE smoked oysters..or even the smoked clams...yum!

Oh please! Take your time! And thank you again!

As for the smoked oyster pasta - I can't believe how good it was! I normally can't stand the tinned oysters (too salty, don't like the consistency), but they're amazing like this.
