Before last year, Somerville had not had an Independence Day celebration since the late 1960s. Though small, this year's event was a nice diversion - a couple bands, a few concession stands, lots of chances to bump into neighbors. Though I was initially a bit unsure about the current mayor, I do have to say that he's been doing well in the community events area. That counts for a lot, too, in an area not revered for its embrace of outsiders and as people tend to become more and more insular.
