Next weekend, Hal and I will be heading downeast again. Though the forecast isn't looking at all good this week, I do hope that it'll clear up a little bit for the wedding we're attending, at least.
As those of you who know me may already know, I'm not a fan of weddings. I understand that now, more than ever perhaps, a show of commitment is an important thing. I am just not into the ostentation that surrounds most of these events. Especially with a divorce rate currently standing at over 50%. Sometimes I think I might prefer funerals, as I'm dead certain that I'm not going to have to attend a second one of those for anybody.
I'm with you. I'm not crazy about the idea of being/getting married, but commitment is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThere of course is a much more scary statistic...
ReplyDelete50% of marriages end in death!
Nappy: Commitment certainly is a nice thing if you can find it. I'd rather be honestly committed to someone and live in sin than go through the whole cinderella dress/feeding a crowd and crate & barrel registry for the sake of being married, however.

Nick: a sobering statistic indeed. All the more reason to stay single. Yeah. (snort)
I was never one of the girls who dreamed of marriage and read the wedding mags. I have a cousin who used to drool over those mags with the dresses and flowers, Ugh!
ReplyDeleteI once came close to getting married and he was the one who wanted all the pomp and circumstance. I wanted to ask a judge friend and have a fancy dinner at home with 10-12 close friends. He said no way. He wanted his white wedding complete with $30,000 tag. Had to impress the family, you see. Jerk.
